Coronavirus. A deadly disease that has impacted the lives of civilians worldwide. This horrific virus has torn apart families, caused unnecessary political standoffs, and shut down civilizations during this pandemic. But through these dark times, light can still shine as the outbreak continues to grow.

As the summer of 2020 comes to a close I would like to reflect on my first year in college. This past school year I was a freshman at the Oxford College of Emory University. My spring semester was finished virtually when the school decided to shut down in-person classes in March. Honestly, when I received the news that we would be using Zoom to finish my classes there were mixed emotions. I was excited to be coming back home and see family and friends, but I was also feeling down because my first year of college was being ruined and would be missing out on memories. Truly bittersweet.

The virus also was altering my future plans. I am recovering from knee surgery I had in December 2019 that involved a 9-12 month recovery. I suffered my injury in November 2019 during one of my college basketball games which resulted in a torn ACL. The doctor told me I could recover in time to play for the start of my sophomore season which really motivated me to make sure I heal and strengthen my knee. But now the likelihood of me having a sophomore season is slim and my college basketball career could possibly be over after only playing 6 games my freshman year. This is really devastating considering all the hard work I put in, but that’s the way the ball bounces sometimes. I truly believe everything happens for a reason and God has a reason for everything so I walk by faith and not by sight.

In school, I was studying Communications and with the new virtual learning technique, it really shows that the world is changing. Schools, businesses, and the rest of the world must now rely on technology even more and must communicate that way as well. So now I must make sure I learn how to connect the skills I learn in school to this new evolving technological world that we live in. Change is inevitable, and to be successful in this world you must learn how to adjust!
